FibroScan

A liver FibroScan is a quick, non-invasive procedure designed to assess the health of your liver, especially for individuals at risk of liver disease. Similar to an ultrasound, the scan uses a special probe that emits vibrations and sound waves to measure the stiffness of your liver tissue. Increased stiffness can be a sign of liver fibrosis (scarring). The scan can also detect fat accumulation, known as steatosis. The test typically takes only 10 to 15 minutes, requires no needles, sedation, or downtime, and can be performed right here in our clinic.

After the procedure, your doctor will review the results with you, which are usually available immediately. The results are presented as numerical scores that indicate the level of fibrosis and fat in your liver. These scores help your healthcare provider determine if there is any liver damage, how advanced it may be, and whether further testing or treatment is needed. FibroScan is commonly used to monitor conditions such as fatty liver disease, hepatitis B or C, and alcoholic liver disease. It’s a valuable tool that helps guide your care while avoiding more invasive procedures.

FAQs

Why would I need a FibroScan?

Your doctor may recommend a FibroScan if you have or are at risk for liver conditions such as fatty liver disease, hepatitis B or C, or alcohol-related liver disease. It helps determine if there’s liver damage and how advanced it may be.

Are FibroScans painful?

It feels similar to a standard ultrasound. You might feel a slight vibration on your skin, although some may experience discomfort.

What do FibroScan results mean?

FibroScan results include measurements of liver stiffness and fat content. Higher stiffness scores may indicate fibrosis, the accumulation of scar tissue in the liver that can disrupt normal liver function and lead to serious conditions such as cirrhosis liver failure. Increased fat levels may suggest steatosis, or fatty liver disease, in which there is an excessive buildup of fatty tissue within the liver that can also lead to cirrhosis. Your doctor will interpret these results with you to determine the next steps in your care.

Is FibroScan covered by insurance?

Many insurance plans cover FibroScan if it’s deemed medically necessary. It’s best to check with your insurance provider or ask us for help with verification.

Can a FibroScan replace a liver biopsy?

FibroScan can provide enough information to avoid a biopsy, but in some situations, a biopsy may still be necessary for a definitive diagnosis.

How to prepare for a FibroScan?

Preparing for a FibroScan includes fasting for 3 hours before the procedure, although unsweetened black coffee or tea is acceptable. Also, be sure to wear a loose-fitting t-shirt.
